Jetstar has moved to reassure passengers that emergency oxygen masks will remain free of charge. It follows the airline’s decision to begin charging customers for use of its overhead lockers.
Under the new policy, passengers travelling on a basic fare will only be permitted to bring one small bag that fits beneath the seat in front of them, while anyone wishing to store luggage above their head will need to pay an additional fee.
The announcement prompted concerns that other previously complimentary parts of the aircraft could soon be moved behind a paywall.
A Jetstar spokesperson confirmed that oxygen masks would remain free.
“For now,” they added with a notable smirk.
The airline said it was continuing to explore creative ways to increase shareholder value over the coming years, noting that fuel remained expensive and profit margins had to be protected somehow.
“This Strait of Hormuz stuff is really smashing us atm,” the spokesperson said.
“Besides, you probably won’t need the oxygen mask anyway, so it’s kind of a win-win,” they added.
After the roaring success of this morning’s baggage announcement, Jetstar has now put a small emergency breathing surcharge on the table. Discussions are process.
