REVIEW Calypso is Barangaroo’s newest nightclub with the best women’s toilet in Sydney

It’s no secret that over the past few years, Sydney’s nightlife has continued to deteriorate. Lockout laws, alcohol licensing and strict council noise regulations, not to mention COVID, has taken an enormous toll on the nightlife and hospitality industry. Dinner conversations as to the state of Sydney’s affairs are no longer controversial, they’re expected.
But before we get our knickers in a knot and throw the towel in, there’s some reason to hold hope. Over the past few months, Sydney has played host to an array of openings and re-openings. Notably, one of these includes The Bristol in Barangaroo. Having closed it’s doors for a hot minute, the heritage-listed hotel is playing host once again.
It’s comeback is no small feat, with five-levels of bars and offerings that are designed to keep you round from midday to midnight.
Perhaps the most exciting part of the re-opening, however, is the launch of Calypso. It’s the new, disco-ball adorned nightclub that Barangaroo has been in long need of. Step in to the intimate venue and embrace pumping house music, Salvadore Dali-esc surrealism, and some serious Studio 54 vibes.
“The disco balls are definitely back bigtime, but in an unexpected way,” says The Bristol’s General Manager, Tom Corbett.
To many people’s relief, Calypso gives us more mature energy than it’s suburban counterparts (Bungalow 8, we’re looking at you). While that’s not to say that it’s an old crowd, it’s certainly catering to a 25-years plus audience. Drinks are more expensive, furnishings are refined, and you’re far less likely to hear the nightly rotation of ‘Fergalicious’ on the hour, every hour. Not that there should be a problem with that, FYI. Music lineups are carefully curated by respected Sydney Producer and DJ, Aidan Bega. In other words, there’s 100% a luxurious je ne sais quoi to it.
Our favourite part of the venue? Hands down, without a doubt, the bathrooms. Never in my years have I come across amenities including Coach perfumes and a wireless GHD hair straightener in the ladies toilets. I’ve never looked and smelled so good coming out of a nightclub in my life, and that is something I can appreciate.
