CONTENT ECONOMY Newsflash: your local Bondi influencer isn’t filming on their phone anymore

Newsflash: that seemingly effortless reel of an iced matcha you watched on TikTok this morning was probably not filmed on an iPhone. It was filmed on a camera setup worth $5,399.
Introducing Canon’s new EOS R6 V and RF 20-50mm power zoom lens kit. AKA, the answer to modern influencers’ prayers across Australia. And with Open Gate recording capabilities, handheld stabilisation and a power zoom lens, it serves as a fairly clear indication as to where the content creator economy is at.
There was a time where in order to be an influencer all you needed was a phone, a ring light and the confidence to embarrass yourself in public. Now, more often than not, there’s a full production happening behind that seemingly relaxed GRWM.

The production in question
Honestly? It kind of makes sense.
What audiences see is a 45-second video. What they don’t see is a person attempting to film vertically, horizontally and spiritually all at once. Sure, the final result might look casual. But the person holding three devices and quietly panicking behind the camera generally does not.
The EOS R6 V is built around making that process slightly less chaotic.
So, what actually is the Canon EOS R6 V?
Perhaps the greatest drawcard to Canon’s new camera is its ability for one clip to be reframed for both vertical and horizontal platforms. In other words, it removes the need to film everything twice. Paired with Canon’s new power zoom lens, the setup is also designed to make smoother framing adjustments easier for people operating without a second person behind the camera.

The new EOS R6 V is low-key a game changer for content creators
Naturally, however, making a solo production look effortless is not particularly cheap.
The EOS R6 V body will set you back $3,599. Although anyone without an existing compatible lens would more realistically be looking at the complete $5,399 camera-and-lens kit. For a limited time, both purchasing options also include a RØDE Wireless GO Gen 3 microphone system while stocks last.
This is obviously not necessary for someone posting the occasional brunch reel. However, for working creators, videographers, small businesses and independent media outlets producing content constantly, the landscape has changed, and the calculation is different.
