WHAT'S ON
Here’s your weekly rundown on what’s good in Sydney

|

Good afternoon Sydney and welcome to another week in paradise!

Well, maybe not so much. This weather is looking more apocalyptic than I’d typically like. But nevertheless, there’s still so much happening in town that it truly would be a crime to not get around it.

Highlights this week include Lunar New Year celebrations that are happening all across Sydney, which means you should consider this your sign to get some xiao long bao into ya. Of course, we also couldn’t forget the Antenna Documentary Film Festival, which is kind of perfect if a movie night is on the cards. And who could forget Valentine’s Day?! Whether you’re celebrating with a special someone or the girls, there’s plenty to choose from.

Alright, all set? Here are the best things to do in Sydney this week.

SPECIALS

Galentine’s Day at Lucky Prawn

Getting lucky has a different meaning this Valentine’s Day, as Marrickville’s hottest Chinese restaurant Lucky Prawn is putting on a ladies-only banquet. The ultra retro and seriously cool restaurant is putting on a $49 Valentine’s Day banquet on Thursday 13, giving you the perfect opportunity to celebrate your female friendships. If you love the vibes of Merivale’s Good Luck restaurant, this is like a cheaper (and probably better) version of it.

  • WHEN: Thursday 13 February
  • WHERE: Lucky Prawn, The Bob Hawke Beer & Leisure Centre Marrickville
  • HOW MUCH: $49
  • CHECK IT OUT HERE.
Picnic At Hanging Rock

Dinner and a show is sorted this month, thanks to the Opera House’s debut of Picnic At Hanging Rock. Widely recognised as one of Australia’s most iconic pieces of contemporary literature, Director Ian Michael has partnered with Sydney Theatre Company to deliver the, “beguiling modern myth, boldly reimagined”. Tickets also start at $60, which is just enough to impress a date without sending yourself broke.

  • WHEN: Monday 17 February to Saturday 15 April
  • WHERE: Sydney Opera House
  • HOW MUCH: Tickets from $60
  • CHECK IT OUT HERE.
Lunar New Year Festivities

The unofficial rule of thumb is that silly season ends after the Lunar New Year, so consider this your sign to go out with a bang. Whether it’s catching a traditional lion dance at Town Hall, celebrating at the Sydney Lunar Streets festival, or simply lapping up some xiao long bao, there’s plenty of action around town. This year of the snake supposedly represents transformation and renewal, and after the year that 2024 was, I think we’re all feeling like it’s time for a refresh.

  • WHEN: Wednesday 29 January to Sunday 16 February
  • WHERE: Multiple locations
  • HOW MUCH: Varies, mostly free entry
  • CHECK IT OUT HERE.

Antenna Documentary Film Festival

Antenna, Australia’s leading non-fiction film festival, is back again this month with a jam packed program. Celebrating its 13th year, the documentary film festival will showcase some of the best international and local talent. Must-watches include Errol Morris’ Separated, which documents family separations at the US-Mexico border; and Piotr Winiewicz’s Australian premiere of About A Hero. You’ll have to be quick though, the festival only runs for 11 days, and with 50 documentaries screening, it’s bound to keep you busy.

  • WHEN: Thursday 6 to Sunday 16 February
  • WHERE: Multiple locations
  • HOW MUCH: Single tickets start at $19.50
  • CHECK IT OUT HERE.
Valentine’s Week at Untied

As expected, Untied Bar in Barangaroo is also getting in and amongst the action this Valentine’s Day. For the entire week, they’re slinging enough $17 pink cocktails to have you forgetting why you even downloaded Hinge in the first place. Flavours include Pink Lemonade, Flamingolada, Raspberry Blossom and a Pink Hibiscus Spritz. This doesn’t sound dangerous at all.

  • WHEN: Monday 10 to Friday 14 February
  • WHERE: Untied Bar, Barangaroo
  • HOW MUCH: $17 cocktails
  • CHECK IT OUT HERE.
Mov’In Bed Beach Cinema

Just because we’re no longer in oodie season doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be able to snuggle up for a good movie. Sure, I’ll take a rooftop aperol any sunny day of the week, but sometimes a good chick flick is exactly what’s needed. If you’re in agreement, then it’s probably worth heading down to Barangaroo to check out the Mov’In Bed Beach Cinema that’s come back to town. Wondering what it is? Exactly what you think, really. Hundreds of queen size beds parked up on the sand right next to the harbour. Honestly, this one’s putting any other standard outdoor movie cinema to shame in Sydney, 10/10 recommend.

  • WHEN: Until Saturday 22 March
  • WHERE: Sydney Harbour Park, Barangaroo
  • HOW MUCH: Sand tickets $12, bed tickets $89
  • CHECK IT OUT HERE.

Titanique: The Musical

We love Celine Dion. We love the movie Titanic. But honestly, never in a million years did we think we’d be combining the two icons in the one sentence, let alone the same show. If you’re confused, let me explain. Titanique: The Musical is the weird, wild and wonderful musical, where the story of Jack and Rose is told from Celine Dion’s perspective. Originally a one-night-only production in Los Angeles back in 2017 quickly took off, with the off-Broadway parody having won three awards at the Lucille Lortel Awards in 2023. Now, the show’s hit Sydney and the shores of The Grand Electric in Surry Hills. We reckon it’s worth giving a shot.

  • WHEN: Until Sunday 30 March
  • WHERE: The Grand Electric, Surry Hills
  • HOW MUCH: From $75
  • CHECK IT OUT HERE.

THE REGULARS

Tostada Tuesday’s at The Butler

Taco Tuesday: unoriginal, basic, done before. Tostada Tuesday? Now we’re talking. And thank god The Butler in Potts Point is listening, because they’ve kicked off an all-new special this season that’s bound to get the tastebuds tingling. From 4pm every Tuesday, Head Chef Amber Doig an array of mouthwatering, $11 tostadas that evolves every week. In other words, make it a regular stop in and you won’t be trying the same thing twice. Wednesday Bottomless Steak Frites

Ladies and gents, it’s time to run, not walk, to The Winery in Surry Hills this Wednesday, because you’ll score bottomless frites and steak for just $65.Usually with these types of specials, restaurant’s will ply you with chips until you’re full, but that’s definitely not the case here. The staff are super generous in topping you up with steak too, which let’s be real, is the reason why we’re all here. For an additional $8 you can also nab bottomless tiramisu (because obviously there’s a different stomach for dessert).

  • WHEN: Every Wednesday dinner service
  • WHERE: The Winery, Surry Hills
  • HOW MUCH: $65

Oyster Happy Hour at The Morrison

I see no reason why the cost of living should get in the way of good taste, and neither does The Morrison. If you didn’t already know, they’re kind of the go-to place for happy hour oysters in town. In fact, they sell a minimum of 6,000 oysters every week. Plus they’ve just unveiled their very new and very fancy oyster cabinet (yes, that’s a thing). Every Wednesday from 6pm to 7pm, you’ll be able to snag those little gems for $1.50 each, which is kind of insane. If you can score a table, it’s the perfect spot to clock off work with your mates. Or head over here if you want to check out the other oyster happy hours currently happening around town.

  • WHEN: Every Wednesday, 6pm to 7pm
  • WHERE: The Morrison, CBD
  • HOW MUCH: $1.50 per oyster
  • CHECK IT OUT HERE.
$5 Tacos and Free Palomas at El Primo Sanchez

Forget Taco Tuesday, Wednesday’s where it’s at (at least according to El Primo Sanchez). The Paddington institution is serving up $5 tacos from 5pm every Wednesday, which is a pretty damn good deal if you ask me. What’s more? If you’re one of the first five customers, they’ll throw in a free Paloma cocktail too. In other words, you’ve now got a great excuse to clock off work right on time.

  • WHEN: Every Wednesday from 5pm
  • WHERE: El Primo Sanchez, Paddington
  • HOW MUCH: From $5
  • CHECK IT OUT HERE.
The Waratah $20 Steak and Chips

Every instagrammer in town is talking about The Waratah’s $20 steak and chips special. Unlike any review in the history of reviews, they might actually be onto something here. If you’re done with home cooking for the week and in need of an outing, the new-ish institution is slinging some of the best and ‘most elevated’ pub food in town (if that’s a thing).

  • WHEN: Every Thursday, until sold out.
  • WHERE: The Waratah, Darlinghurst
  • HOW MUCH: $20
  • CHECK IT OUT HERE.
