IT'S NICE, IT'S DIFFERENT, IT'S UNUSUAL Lady Gaga’s new movie trailer for Joker sounds awfully familiar…and it’s exactly what you think

|

Yesterday morning, we woke up to a rather splendid little surprise. We got a sneak peak of Lady Gaga’s new track, “Joker”, in advance of her feature in the sequel Joker: Folie à Deux. As major Gaga fans, consider us chomping at the big for the new soundtrack (and movie, ofc).

But funnily enough, yesterday’s unveiling is getting us excited for all the wrong (or right?) reasons. Sure, Gaga’s vocals are on point, as always. But it didn’t take long for the us, alongside the entirety of Australia, to be whipped up into an internet frenzy. Why, might you ask? The song has awfully strange resemblances to one we know all too well…And I mean…the Kath and Kim theme song.

Yes, you heard me correctly.

Now, before we fluff our feathers and claim Lady Gaga has shamelessly ripped the song, we’re here to tell you she definitely has not. In fact, the song originates from a 1964 musical called The Roar of the Greasepaint – The Smell of the Crowd. Anthony Newly and Cyril Ritchard scored the musical, and this is where our dearly beloved track all began. Since then, there’s been an array of renditions and versions of it, most notably from Australia’s favourite hornbag, Gina Riley.

And while Gaga certainly adds her own flair to it, I’m not convinced any true fan will ever be able to separate the two. Forever I will pair Lady Gaga and Kim from Fountain Lakes in the same thought bubble. And I’m not entirely mad about it.

If you’re like me and already hooked, you’ll be glad to know that Gaga is releasing her full album Harlequin on 27 September, which you’ll be able to listen to here.
