NEWS Tens of thousands rally in Hyde Park for pro-Palestine protests yesterday after court of bans Opera House march

Thousands gathered in Sydney’s Hyde Park yesterday for a pro-Palestine rally, just days after the NSW Court of Appeal blocked organisers’ bid to march to the Sydney Opera House.

The ruling, handed down on Thursday, sided with NSW Police, citing crowd-crush risks and limited exit points around the Opera House forecourt. Despite the decision, the Palestine Action Group pressed ahead with a peaceful assembly at Hyde Park, drawing an estimated 30,000 attendees.

The event came at a tense political moment: the court’s decision coincided on the cusp of a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, and a return of the Israeli hostages.

Speakers called for an end to Australia’s defence ties with Israel and renewed sanctions, while attendees held signs and flags in solidarity with Gaza. Those who did attempt to march towards the Opera House were swiftly turned away by local police.
