WHAT'S ON We’re recommending cinematic gothic romance on a Monday night and I’m not sorry about it

|

It’s official. It’s happening. We’ve entered our last week of winter, and warm weather is literally banging on our doorstep. That collective shift we all felt as the weather hit the 20s last week? Yeah, that’s the sound of summer and Sydney exiting its hibernation.

In celebration of the seasonal changes, we’ve listed a solid lineup of everything going down this week in Sydney. Because to save yourself for the weekend is to be a loser. From live music, to comedy acts and free burgers, we’ve got you covered.

All set? Here are the best things to do in Sydney this week.

LAST MIN TIX: Eartheater at Manning Bar

If you’re still trying to keep the weekend fun alive, head across to Sydney Uni tonight for some cool people music. Eartheater has returned to Australia to bring onlookers a show of experimental electronic music and cinematic goth romance. Whatever that means?? Tickets aren’t necessarily cheap, but we’re placing bets that this’ll be a weird, wild and wonderful show.

  • When: Monday 26 August, from 8pm
  • Where: Manning Bar, USyd
  • How much: $65
  • Check it out here.
Hotel Harry’s Monday Night Comedy

Controversial take, but we think Monday nights are severely underrated. Okay, you might have to battle with a few restaurant and bar closures, but that’s no excuse to give up altogether. Introducing Hotel Harry’s weekly Monday night comedy special. Now, let us be upfront: some of the acts are absolute shockers. After all, these comedians are taking the graveyard shift. But in so many ways this makes it even funnier. Come on, stop being boring and do yourself a favour.

  • When: Every Monday from 7pm
  • Where: Hotel Harry’s
  • How much: From $20
  • Check it out here.
The Welcome Choir

Whether you’re looking to do something wholesome, missing your weekend karaoke stint, or just feel like getting out and about, head over to Waywards at the Bank Hotel this Tuesday for The Welcome Choir. Kicking off at 6pm, you’ll be instructed under the expertise of choir master Rebekah Jensen for an evening singalong. This week’s song of choice is no other than Beyonce’s ‘Texas Hold ‘Em’. Kind of random but we think it’s kind of cute.

  • When: Tuesday 27 August, from 6pm
  • Where: Waywards, The Bank Hotel
  • How much: $20
  • Check it out here.
Icebergs Lasagna, Vino + Tiramisu

Ladies and gentlemen, I’ve done it this time. I’ve found the ultimate dinner spot for your graveyard shift date. Icebergs Bar in Bondi has announced their indefinite Tuesday night special of lasagna, vino and tiramisu that’s running for not cheap, but not crazy prices either. They’ll even be decking out the entire restaurant in those cheesy, red chequered tablecloths and serving wine carafes (how very romantic). Perfect place to impress someone you hardly know.

  • When: Every Tuesday
  • Where: Icebergs Bar
  • How much: Depends on your taste :/
  • Check it out here.
Free Burgers at Will’s

With cozzie livs and all, it’s a rare day in Sydney that you’re left with change from a $50 note for dinner. This month, Merivale’s stepped up to the plate (pardon the pun), and changing how things are done. For the rest of August, purchase a drink over $10 and you’ll score a free, Oklahoma-style cheeseburger. That’s right, their famous wagyu burgers are flying out the doors by the dozen and until stocks last.

  • When: Wednesday’s to Sunday’s in August, 12pm till 9pm
  • Where: Will’s Coogee
  • How much: Free with $10 drink purchase
  • Check it out here.
Sister Act The Musical

Calling all musical buffs, this one’s for you. Sister Act is officially reaching Australian shores this month, and delivering a show that’s bound to get your habit in a twist. Australian idol star, Casey Donovan, will be appearing as Dolores Van Cartier, alongside Genevieve Lemon as Mother Superior, and Rhonda Burchmore as Sister Mary Lazarus. Tony and 8-time Oscar award winner Alan Menken also did the original soundtrack, so you can expect some seriously good hymns and hallelujahs.

  • When: From Wednesday 7 August
  • Where: Capitol Theatre
  • How much: From $70
  • Check it out here.
PICKLED ﻛﺑﯾس

No one said dinner and a show had to break the bank, and thank god Belvoir St Theatre gets that. This month, they bring Najee Tannous’ new production Pickled ﻛﺑﯾس to stage. The story tracks two brothers, Sammy and Yousif, who both work to navigate their Middle Eastern and queer identities after the death of their mother. The dramedy sold out during its work-in-development season, which is typically a good sign. The show also forms part of Belvoir’s 25A initiative, which supports independent and emerging artists. An honest show, reasonable prices and small theatre, what more could you ask for people.

  • When: Tuesday 20 August to Sunday 8 September
  • Where: Belvoir St Theatre
  • How much: $25
  • Check it out here.
