2026 PREDICTIONS New Harbour Bridge cycleway set to become Sydney’s newest e-bike carpark

|

Yesterday, Sydney officially opened its new 170-metre cycleway on the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It’s a win for cyclists, and, according to locals, a strong contender for Sydney’s next e-bike carpark.

The path promises safer, smoother connections between the north and south of the harbour, plus uninterrupted views for commuters who are inclined to look up. Transport authorities are calling it a win for active and environmentally friendly transport. Sydney residents are “giving it a week”.

If this feels familiar, it’s because it is. It appears that the town has been running a live experiment in e-bike abandonment for quite some time now. Late last year, we chronicled the rise of the e-bike fleet, and the uncanny ability for them to appear everywhere inconvenient, and nowhere convenient, all at once.

Outside of being one big lime green eyesore, they also pose a serious accessibility issue. Many are left blocking ramps, footpaths and doorways which stall pedestrians and entirely block those, for example, in a wheelchair, from passing through.

On paper, the Harbour Bridge cycleway is exactly what the city needs. In reality, it’s flat, central, highly visible and extremely compatible with a hire bike being left on its side “just for a second”.

The real test won’t be how many cyclists use it. It’ll be how long it takes before the first e-bike is parked diagonally across the path, another is abandoned nearby, and a third has somehow ended up in a position no one can fully explain nor describe.

Still, congratulations are in order. The cycleway is open. The conditions are ideal. Sydney will take it from here.
