WTF Avocado stock prices expected to crash across the country after new Median Housing Report findings released

|

In news that surprises absolutely no one but still somehow manages to crush our soul, Sydney has just been crowned the most unaffordable housing market on Earth. Yes, that’s right, we’ve officially overtaken Hong Kong and ranked number one in a game no one wanted to win.

According to the 2025 Demographia International Housing Affordability report released last month, the median Sydney home now costs $1.2 million, or 14.7 times the median NSW income. That’s above the “impossibly unaffordable” threshold of 9.0. Because apparently, just being unaffordable wasn’t dramatic enough.

And while your boomer uncle might still be blaming brunch, experts (and literally everyone under 40) are pointing fingers elsewhere, namely at decades of policy failure. Government initiatives like the First Home Buyer schemes, stamp duty concessions, and shared equity programs have been widely slammed as band-aid fixes on a bullet wound. Critics have argued that mostly just inflate demand while doing sweet fuck all to address housing supply, or regulate investors gobbling up the market like it’s Black Friday at Bunnings.

On socials, the reaction has been predictably feral. TikTok and Twitter (sorry, “X”) users have flooded timelines with hot takes, from “how is this legal” to “glad I spent $120k on a degree I’ll never use just to rent a mouldy shoebox.”

Meanwhile, rental prices continue to soar and vacancy rates sit in the negatives (or at least that’s how it feels). Housing advocates are calling for serious structural reform, anything from stricter regulations on short-term rentals to actual public housing investment, not just fancy rebrands of old ideas.

So if you’re out here doing mental gymnastics to justify dropping $7.50 on a flat white, rest assured: the maths doesn’t matter. The system was broken long before you added oat milk babe.
