WHAT'S ON
Here are the best (and free) events happening at SXSW this week

|

Ahh…SXSW. The bizarrely expensive and mildly confusing festival that finally makes creatives feel like they have their own networking conference. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all here for it – especially when it lets me do free shit in Sydney during the week.

And despite popular belief, you don’t actually need a ticket to get into or participate in everything. In fact, there’s a decent number of events and activations that are entirely open to the public (win).

Our top pick? It has to be Papa Salt Presents. Not only for Margot Robbie purposes, but we can’t ever skip out on a good gin and live music moment. We’re also lowkey vibing with USA House’s breakdancing workshop, because the rest of the world might have moved on from Raygun, but we certainly haven’t.

Anyway, enough of my talking, it’s time to get planning. Here are the best (and free) events at SXSW this week that you should go to.

Papa Salt Presents at SXSW Sydney

For sure, this is our top pick when it comes to free events at SXSW Sydney this week. Margot Robbie’s gin brand, Papa Salt, is appearing at Tumbalong Park this Saturday evening to play host to the Australian premiere of The Endless Summer.

It’s the 60th anniversary of Bruce Brown’s genre-defying, quintessentially surf-y film that continues to evoke deep nostalgia. The brand will also be debuting their all-new Papa Salt Paloma premixed cans, which shouldn’t be missed. To top it off? After the screening, Touch Sensitive and BALTHVS will both be playing and keeping the vibes high at the afterparty.

  • WHEN: Saturday 19 October, film screening from 5.30pm and afterparty from 7.30pm
  • WHERE: Tumbalong Park, Darling Harbour
  • HOW MUCH: Free

The Art of Breaking Workshop at USA House

Calling all Raygun fans (or haters). If you ever watched the Olympic performance and thought you could do better, now is your time to show us what you’ve got. Yes, the dreaded moment is officially here. On Thursday, you’ll have your very own opportunity to bust a move and show everyone just how easy (or difficult) breakdancing really is. You’ll learn the basics, along with musical, creative and sequencing selections that every legit breakdancer needs to know.

Thankfully, there’ll also be professional guidance from US Olympian B-boy Jeffro. Oh, and a happy hour afterwards, so you can drink the inevitable pain, sorrow and humiliation you’ve caused away.

  • WHEN: Thursday 17 October, from
  • WHERE: Pumphouse Sydney
  • HOW MUCH: Free

Amazon Primeville

Fan of The Office? Or perhaps you’re a RHO Salt Lake City die hard? Either way, you’ll be able to get your TV bingeing fix in real life this week, thanks to Amazon Primeville. From Tuesday to Sunday, Fratelli Fresh will be transformed into a fictional town that will transport you to some of your favourite film sets.

In an Australian first, the local streaming service brought together the biggest and most popular streaming partners to consumers in a single event, in celebration of all the entertainment available on Prime Video. Follow the minions to collect delicious banana macarons; undergo a bespoke lip application by experts and pout like a real housewife; or take some jelly shots and hit the dancefloor just like the Last King of the Cross. Whatever you’re a fan of, each set will seriously have you double taking where you actually are.

  • WHEN: Tuesday 15 to Sunday 20 October
  • WHERE: Fratelli Fresh, Darling Harbour
  • HOW MUCH: Free
  • CHECK IT OUT HERE.

+91 Calling!

Rounding out the festivities for the week is none other than +91 Calling! It’s a free, all-day showcase of Indian creative culture kicking off at 12.30pm. The festival will see six acts from India or Indian diaspora take to the stage, performing anything and everything from hip hop, to r&b, to club music. Keep an eye out for the likes of SHRETA, Mali, Yung Raja and Manara, who will all be appearing on the day.

  • WHEN: Sunday 20 October, from 12.30pm
  • WHERE: Tumbalong Park Main Stage
  • HOW MUCH: Free
  • CHECK IT OUT HERE.
Suntory Minus 196 Vending Machine

Of course, we couldn’t leave without paying a special homage to our favourite canned booze, Suntory Minus 196. After the debut of their infamous three-story vending machine at Tumbalong Park last year, they’re bringing the activation of epic proportions back once again.

The first floor of the structure, also known as the ‘Infinity Level’, will reveal hundreds of Suntory cans (heaven). Walk up to the second level to catch the ‘Tokyo Neon Nightlife Zone’, and if you make it all the way up to the top of level three, you’ll be treated to smacking rooftop views and vibes. Tokyo Taco will also be slinging food, so you can eat, drink, be merry, that whole thing.

  • WHEN: Monday 14 to Sunday 20 October
  • WHERE: Tumbalong Park, Darling Harbour
  • HOW MUCH: Free entry
  • CHECK IT OUT HERE.
