This Friday marks the iconic, 10 year return of Sleep Under the Stars. And we think you ought to get around it.
Not sure what you’re signing up for? It’s the iconic, once-in-a-lifetime charity event that happens every year in Sydney to help raise awareness for homeless children and young people. And before you chuck it in the too hard basket, let me tell you why it’s worth giving a shot.
Kicking off at 5pm on Friday, the Stargazer Lawn at Barangaroo will be transformed into a playground of games, live music and food stalls. You’ll be able to pop a squat, grab your favourite blankie, and snuggle under the stars for the evening. Oh, and it’s free to register for.
What’s best? You’re doing it for a bloody good cause.
In 2022-23, over 76,000 children sought help from NSW homelessness services, the highest than any other state in the country. 38,000 young people aged between 15-24 have presented to specialist services, with one in three experiencing domestic violence. Almost half of young people have also been diagnosed with a mental health condition.
To say young homelessness is an epidemic in NSW is an understatement.
So before you book that ticket to The Island for this Friday night, save your money and try something a little different. Go on, do it for the children.
