I THOUGHT YOU LIKED DANGER? It’s true: that viral Apex dance scene was filmed in our very own Sutherland Shire

|

It is with some pride that we can confirm the Sutherland Shire has recently made a meaningful and unexpected contribution to global cinema.

Not through a sweeping coastal drama, or a tasteful tourism campaign. No, the Shire’s latest screen credit comes via Apex. It’s Netflix’s new survival thriller starring Charlize Theron, Taron Egerton and Eric Bana, where one of the film’s most viral scenes was filmed on local soil.

Specifically, that dancing scene.

Apex (2026), directed by Baltasar Kormakur, is a survival action thriller starring Charlize Theron and Taron Egerton, where a skilled climber is hunted in the wild and must fight to survive. To make the film feel as real as possible, the director chose remote locations across two countries, filming the opening climbing sequences at Norway’s Troll Wall, one of Europe’s tallest vertical rock faces, before moving production to the rugged wilderness of New South Wales, Australia. The crew filmed in harsh, challenging conditions including the Blue Mountains National Park, deep caves accessible only by swimming, and remote gorges requiring helicopter access. While some climbing sequences were shot on location at the real Troll Wall, the production also built precise replica sets matching the mountain’s rock features to safely film actors at extreme heights. Charlize Theron performed most of her own stunts, learning rock climbing from scratch and enduring real physical challenges including torn muscles, a fractured toe, and injuries requiring multiple surgeries. All these practical choices, from authentic remote locations to Theron’s committed physical performance, were done to make the stunts, environment, and overall experience feel more authentic and immersive on screen. #movies #drama #trending #apex #acting

For anyone whose algorithm has spared them thus far, the scene in question features Taron Egerton’s character dancing and squawking. It is theatrical. It is unsettling. It is strangely committed. And, as it turns out, it may also be one of the Shire’s most significant recent contributions to the arts.

A proud day, truly.

Behind-the-scenes video from the shoot also gives a glimpse at how the local landscape was transformed for the film, proving that the Shire might have more duality than we’d usually credit it for.

“For a film like Apex — where the elements and the terrain are characters that loom just as large as the movie stars battling in it — no other country in the world could have taken the place of Australia as our primary location,” Kormákur tells Netflix.

Thankfully, So Sydney! was on the ground back in March 2025, when filming was underway. Naturally, we got the BTS pics. Scroll below.
