GIRD YOUR LOINS The Golden Bachelor is about to start and here’s all the info we know you’re looking for

To all of our surprise, it turns out that true love isn’t just for people who say “vulnerability” every third sentence in a candle-lit mansion. It’s also for, well, kind of old people.

That’s right, after raving success in the US last year, The Golden Bachelor has officially landed in Australia, and here to prove that romance, red wine and rose ceremonies don’t always come with an age limit (or a hair-transplant sponsorship).

What’s the difference between The Golden Bachelor and The Bachelor?

Other than an older age bracket of contestants and a mildly condescending euphemism to describe said people, nothing’s changed really. We’re still scoring a suspiciously hunky man, a group of mildly problematic ladies, rose ceremonies, slow-motion tears, and all the other usual Bachelor clichés you can think of.

Channel Nine themselves are calling it the “older, wiser, hotter” version of the now defunct show that once gripped the nation. So you best believe I’m locking in for a show that’s promising emotional-maturity-come-cocktail-party content.

So who is this year’s Bachelor?

Meet Bear: tall, dark, Canadian, and about 40 percent more emotionally intelligent than your average Bachelor contestant (which, may I caveat, isn’t necessarily hard to achieve). A widower and father of three, Bear’s spent the past decade raising his sons solo after losing his wife, Audrey, and his mum in the same year. And yes, I’m already crying.

He sails, skis, writes poetry and somehow manages to make “motorcycle guy” sound wholesome. We met him earlier this year when he made his very own debut at the Logies, and let me tell you, whoever did casting for this show deserves a pay raise, stat.

What else do I need to know?

Hosting the show is our trusty lady Samantha Armytage, here to keep the peace, the pacing, and possibly the blood pressure of viewers over fifty. She’ll be tasked with steering a cast of women who’ve actually lived a bit. They’ve loved, lost, raised families, and almost certainly don’t have “content creator” in their job titles.

What’s more? The show is just around the corner now, with The Golden Bachelor premiering on Monday 20 October at 7.30 pm on Channel 9 and 9Now.
