Unless you’ve been living under a literal rock, you’d know that none other than His and Her Majesty themselves have been taking a trip down under this weekend.
On Sunday, we spotted King Charles III and Queen Camilla attending a church service at St Thomas Cathedral in North Sydney. It comes as the first engagement of their six-day royal tour, and was officiated by the Archbishop of Sydney, Kanishka Raffel.
The service was strictly open to local congregation. Nevertheless, this didn’t stop a cast of hundreds standing outside to catch a glimpse of the King. Many royalists proudly waved the Union Jack flag in support of the monarch. Many did not share the same sentiment.
In just three days of visiting, King Charles III has been seriously copping it. Most notably from Pro-Palestine and First Nations activists, there’s been many the placard-brandishing protestor. Just earlier today, Senator Lidia Thorpe was removed from Parliament reception, shouting “Not my king!”.
The trip has also ignited dormant conversations surrounding the Australian public’s favourability towards a monarchy. Late last year, a YouGov survey revealed that since Queen Lizzie’s passing, more Australians want to become a Republic as soon as possible. Nevertheless, those in favour of ditching the system asap still only make up for 32% of the population.
King Charles III and Queen Camilla will continue to do the Eastern shore rounds until this Wednesday. Then, they’ll finally listen to their protestors advice and go back home.
