27 DRESSES
We brought a bridal stylist in to rank the MAFS wedding dresses from best to worst

|

Okay, so we’re officially into the thick of MAFS for this year. Which also means our notepads are well and truly out, and the scrutiny has most definitely begun. Now, as much as we’d like to think that we’ve analysed every scene from every angle so far, we’ve missed out on one key judgment.

What about the dresses?

With the MAFS ceremonies officially wrapped up for the year, we thought it’d be fitting to chat to a bridal stylist to hear their two cents RE the dress choices for this year. After all, it’s only the most important piece of clothing you’ll ever buy, right?

#1 (BEST DRESSED): Carina

Bridal Stylist: “Ok, Carina definitely takes the cake for me. I love an all lace look, and I love that she paired it with a lace trim veil. When it comes to this kind of look, more is definitely more. It feels very on brand for her, especially given the fact that she comes from an Italian background. We love.

But with that being said, I’ve got to admit it: I’m not into the hair. I know some brides are adamant that they want their hair down for the day, and sure, that’s great. But there’s way too much going on with the dress and flowers that I’m going into sensory overload. Like really, we can hardly see the dress behind all those luscious locks, it’s entirely counterproductive.”

#2: Awhina

Bridal Stylist: “Ok, it’s simple, and it’s safe, but hear me out. It fits PROPERLY. And honestly, I can’t say that for many of the other wedding gowns on MAFS. I don’t know whether these are samples that didn’t go through a tailoring process or what, but this was a common theme across almost all the other gowns.

There’s a bow on the back, which is kind of on-trend right now. She’ll probably look back in five years and seriously regret that. I’m also not quite sold on the spaghetti straps here. She’s quite ample busted, so I always just worry that those straps aren’t going to cut it after a night of dancing. Other than that, it’s simple, but it is quite classic.”

#3: Katie

Bridal Stylist: “Here’s where my head is at. Firstly, it fits properly, which is a major win. Secondly, while it’s not necessarily my personal style, I can tell that she feels really good in it. And frankly, after the season she’s had so far, she deserves to feel good.

I’m a strong believer in personal style, and what might not be my individual taste doesn’t mean it’s not the right dress for someone. You can tell this 100% reflects her personality, and she also looks super comfortable in it. For a dress that you’ll be wearing for twelve hours, that’s a seriously underrated criteria. That being said, I fucking do the white fur jacket she paired with it. I think it cheapened the whole look, and if I was her, I would’ve just copped the cold.”

#4: Jamie

Bridal Stylist: “Okay, so not my fave, but not the worst. I think what’s mostly throwing me off this one is, once again, going back to the fit. Because she’s pint-sized, you can tell that the straps haven’t been tailored to her height, which is why they’re buckling like that.

Jamie’s also got a snatched little waist and I feel like this corset is not showing it off. After all, brides love to feel cinched on their wedding day, and something’s just quite not right. Again, it might be because of the fit. Knowing Jamie, I feel like she could have gone for something that was a bit more statement-y, to reflect her personality. This is nice, but that’s just it. Nice.”

#5: Sierah

Bridal Stylist: “Okay, so this one’s not in the range of outwardly offensive by any means, but I just don’t love it. Between it not fitting properly, those mesh panels down the sides, I fear it’s just a bit meh.

With that being said, I think Sierah was spot on in wearing that kind of neckline, it definitely suits her. I just think the material is not quite right, which is making it look cheaper than it probably is. Remember, these dresses are in the multitude of THOUSANDS. They should look absolutely perfect, so anything less is just not enough.”

#5: Ashleigh

Bridal Stylist: “So once again this isn’t my personal style, but I think she looks really beautiful. And happy, which is what’s most important. This look would have been mind blowing if the embroidery covered more of the dress. I actually don’t hate this at all.

What I can’t get past, however, are those incredibly limp cap sleeves. I don’t actually understand their purpose at all. They’re too skinny to really make a statement, but still there, just hanging. If this was a strapless, it probably would have made it to top three, but I just can’t get over it. Sorry.”

#6: Rhi

Bridal Stylist: “So if I close my eyes to the top half, right? In love. But that’s the problem, it’s not just half a dress. You can’t really see it well in this image (and I suspect that’s intentional), but this neckline is fitting her so poorly that it looks like those peaks are about to impale her armpits. This is a prime example of bad tailoring, as it’s sitting way to wide for Rhi’s frame, which is such a shame.

The beading is stunning, the skirt is stunning, but this really intensely sculpted neckline with her hair up just looks really severe. Rhi would have looked incredible in a similar cut to Sierah’s dress, because that square neckline would highlight her beautiful shoulders. I feel like this dress had potential, but just didn’t live up to the mark.”

#7: Jacqui

Bridal Stylist: “Jacqui, Jacqui, Jacqui. What ever will we do with you. I know this might be controversial to some, but I really can’t stand wedding dresses that are anything but white. Maybe, just maybe, you can occasionally pull a Tammy Hembrow and go for a soft baby pink. But that is it. I just think it’s so gimmicky, and it tells me that you’re trying too hard to be different. It’s your one day to wear the big white wedding dress baby, just embrace it. I don’t know, that’s my opinion at least.

If this had been in white, it would be a lot higher on the ranks. Overall it’s a reasonably nice dress. But the one thing I will stay. You NEED to steam that motherfucker babe. Where were producers? Where was your sister? That’s like the first thing you do when you wake up on your wedding day. I have no idea how this happened, especially given how much of a perfectionist she appears to be.”

#8: Morena

Bridal Stylist: “Darling Morena, I know this dress meant the world to you, and I know you love it. And for that, I applaud you. After all, your opinion is the most important opinion (who am I?!) But, if you’re asking for mine, then I’ll be frank. This is just not it. Every texture, every cut, and everything that you could put into this gown, has been put into this gown. I don’t know where to look, and I don’t know where to start. But like I said, you are glowing, so I guess that’s all that matters.

The one thing that really is unforgivable are those fishnet stockings. On your wedding day?! I can’t, I actually can’t.”
