REVIEW We tried the W Hotel’s $88 sushi roll to see if it was really worth the hype

|

Last week, we infiltrated the W Hotel to get a sneak peak of their ‘REFRESH Weekend’. From Friday 20 to Sunday 22 September, the hotel will be partnering with Perrier to bring a series of beverage-focused events. Asia Top 50 Bar, Nutmeg & Clove, will also be taking over the bar for the weekend for a limited-time residency. Aka, the cocktails will be cracking.

While the entire weekend looks fabulous, what stood out to us was the $88 sushi roll that’s on the menu only for the day of Sunday 22 September. Yes, you heard that right. The Living Room bar is hosting a ‘Sushi n Sips’ event, and slinging what might just be the most expensive sushi roll in town. Consider us officially intrigued.

Naturally, curiosity got the better of us. It didn’t take long for us to make haste to the hotel and see what the hype was all about. The ‘Showstopper Roll’ features Abrolhos Island Scallop, Ora King Salmon, Fraser Isle Crab and Bluefin Tuna Belly. This definitely started to explain the price tag. Oh, that and the fact that the roll is topped with Beluga Caviar and literal Gold Leaf.

What did we think, you’re wondering?

Our overall input? Let’s be real, it’s hard to justify an $88 price tag in the midst of a cost of living crisis. That being said, if you’re looking for a silly (and delicious) way to treat yo’ self this month, the Showstopper might just be that. The rest of the menu is relatively reasonably priced, and if you’re splitting the bill with a mate then the final sting won’t be so bad. At the end of the day, it’s an experience, and it’s up to you whether you see value in it or not.
