VERDICT Rebel Wilson wins defamation case brought by The Deb star Charlotte MacInnes

|

In breaking news, Rebel Wilson has won the defamation case brought against her by The Deb lead actor Charlotte MacInnes, with the Federal Court dismissing the proceeding this afternoon.

The dispute centred on a series of social media posts in which Wilson claimed MacInnes had recanted complaints of sexual assault involving one of the film’s producers, in order to advance her own career. MacInnes denied making or retracting any complaint and alleged the posts had damaged her reputation.

Justice Elizabeth Raper found MacInnes had changed her story while on set for The Deb. Nevertheless, she failed to establish that the posts had caused, or were likely to cause, serious harm. She was also ordered to pay Wilson’s legal costs.

The decision closes one chapter of the increasingly messy legal fallout surrounding Wilson’s directorial debut.
