Can’t get to Germany this month? Here are the best Oktoberfest celebrations going down

, |

They love beer, we love beer. They love sausages, we love sausages. And to nobody’s surprise, Germany loves Oktoberfest, and so do us Australians.

However, for the majority of us who sadly can’t make their way over to Munich this year, we’re once again forced to bring the annual festivities down south. And when you look at what’s happening in and around town, it’s not necessarily the enormous compromise you might think.

Ask us? It’s about time you strapped on your lederhosen and grabbed your favourite beer stein. There are plenty of Oktoberfest events happening right here in Sydney, and it’s about time you got around it.

Oktoberfest in the Gardens

Australia’s largest celebration of Oktoberfest in Sydney, Oktoberfest in the Gardens is officially back for another year. It’s bringing bier halls, Berghain-inspired raves and enough bratwursts to feed a small village. If you’re looking to go all out, this is the place to be. There’ll be authentic Bavarian food markets, roving performers, festival rides, DJs, and of course, a shit ton of beer. What more could one ask for?

  • WHERE: The Domain
  • HOW MUCH: Bonus release tickets $89

Oktoberfest Street Party at Munich Brauhaus in The Rocks

I’d say Munich Brauhaus is hosting something a little more lowkey, but I’m not entirely sure that’s true. From 11am on Saturday 19 October, they’re kicking down the doors and opening their venue in The Rocks for a full day Bavarian extravaganza. There’ll be keg openings Oktoberfest games, traditional slap dancers, and even a yodelling contest. Tickets to the event only cost $25, and you’ll score entry as well as a 500mL stein of beer, pretzel and hat. Sounds like a banging deal if you ask me.

BROOKtoberfest

Forget the pub crawl, we’ve all been there and done that. This weekend, Sydney’s Northern Beaches is scoring a brewery crawl that really shouldn’t be missed. Introducing BROOKtoberfest, Brookvale’s very own take on the iconic German festival.

Over the course of the day, you’ll move between venues including including Freshwater Brewing7th Day BrewingBucketty’s, Dad & DavesManly Spirits, and Goodradigbee on a German-style crawl. Other than the obvious choice of beer, there’ll also be plenty of cocktails, German snacks and entertainment to keep you busy. It also runs for six hours, so remember, it’s a marathon, not a sprint.

The Bavarian Bier Hall

If you’re looking for an ongoing celebration, look no further than The Bavarian Bier Halls being set up at every venue in Sydney. You heard me, each cafe is being entirely transformed to have you second guessing whether you’ve landed in Munich. And if you’re keen on stepping up the celebrations, head over to World Square on Friday 11 October, or Miranda and Manly cafes on Saturday 12 October, for the ‘ultimate’ Oktoberfest parties. Here, you’ll find German Oompa bands, keg tap ceremonies and special games.

  • WHEN: Until Sunday 27 October
  • WHERE: All Bavarian locations in NSW
  • HOW MUCH: Free
