In a plot twist that absolutely no one at Nine HQ had on their bingo card, Married at First Sight’s Awhina Rutene and Billy Belcher have hard-launched their relationship. No, it wasn’t with a glossy mag exclusive or a kissy TikTok, but instead with the new-age equivalent of a royal proclamation: an Instagram carousel.
The photos in question, posted late last night, show the pair at a date night in Perth, looking very coupled-up and suspiciously coordinated. Awhina’s caption? “I’ll keep this one 🤭.” Billy’s? “Who really ate?”
Naturally, fans flooded the comments with delight, confusion, and a few well-placed digs at their former partners. And look, fair. Because if you watched even five minutes of this season, you’d know these two were not matched together, but perhaps should have been (the ‘couple swap’ jokes probs gave it away ngl).
Because as it turns out, Awhina’s made-for-TV marriage with Adrian was about as enjoyable as a mandatory HR training video, while Billy’s time with Sierah unravelled the moment she emotionally defected to Adrian’s side. Yes, you read that correctly. No, we don’t have the energy to explain it again.
Rumours of a post-show connection between Awhina and Billy have been circulating for a while. Previously, they’ve been spotted at each other’s birthdays, sharing oddly specific playlists, and generally appearing in too many “just friends” group shots. But now, the subtle reposting and emoji-only commenting has culminated in the ultimate reality TV endgame: coordinated hard launch, followed by chaos.

And really, who can blame them? It’s clear the MAFS matchmaking process (aka “guess and hope for drama”) didn’t do them many favours. But somehow, after all the commitment ceremonies, public therapy sessions, and Channel Nine trauma-bonding, they’ve found something that resembles a functioning relationship.
And while there’s been no official statement as of yet, let’s be real, who needs one? The photo dump says it all. Two people, out of the rubble, choosing each other. And not because they were told to by a producer in a headset, but because, against all odds, they actually seem to get along.
A radical concept, really.
So, congratulations to Billy and Awhina. Not because they’ve found love, necessarily, but because they’ve managed to do it after the cameras stopped rolling, which, as far as MAFS alumni go, basically makes them elite.
