BEIGE When did Sydney red carpets get so…safe?

After a successful first season, Deadloch is officially back, with Amazon Prime bringing the series in for round two. And to celebrate? A very Sydney-coded red carpet moment, of course.

Now, I’ll be honest. When it comes to red carpet fashion commentary these days, I’m finding myself with increasingly less to say. Not because the looks are offensive, but because they’re just…much of a muchness.

Sure, this isn’t the Oscars. I get that. But somewhere along the way, Sydney seems to have developed an almost uniform approach to red carpet dressing.

And it’s not that any of it looks bad. It’s just that no one looks particularly different. Which begs the question: when did red carpets stop being about personality, and start being about playing it safe?

Funnily enough, it doesn’t even feel like it’s about dressing for approval anymore. It feels like it’s about not wanting to be perceived at all. No risks, no statements, and god forbid any overdressing. Anything that sets you apart from the person standing next to you suddenly feels like too much.

Now, I’ll give credit where it’s due. Madeline Sami, Enis English and Justin Hill break away from the pack. There’s colour, there’s texture, there’s something for me to actually look at. Stan Rittner, I’ll give you a nod too. After all, that handstand was pretty hectic.

As for everyone else? A carpet full of people who aren’t just dressing similarly, but almost blending into the media wall behind them. Tell me you don’t also see a literal sea of black outfits with heads just bobbing above.

Maybe it’s a Sydney thing. Maybe it’s an Australia thing. I’m not sure. But if the whole point of a red carpet is to give people something to look at, talk about, and remember, surely we can aim a little higher than a lineup of interchangeable black fabric.

Because right now, it’s all feeling a bit…beige.
