Just hours ago, in a major announcement from the US, President Biden has declared his withdrawal from the upcoming 2024 Presidential Election. The announcement comes just one week after the shooting and attempted assassination of Donald Trump.
Biden, who was set to lead the Democratic Party in the upcoming November election, will instead back Vice President Kamala Harris in lieu of his standing.
“It is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to step down,” he announced in his statement. Biden also expressed his intention to release a more detailed statement later next week, after he has spent further time recovering from his COVID diagnosis.
Rep James Clyburn and the Clintons have already come out to express their support for Harris, who, if successful, would be the first woman of colour to take office. However, many top congressional leaders have not shared this same sentiment, calling for an open nomination process.
Biden’s stepdown has been heavily anticipated for a while now, particularly after his performance at the recent presidential debate. Many have raised concerns about his capacity to hold a second term in office. This has led to comments that he is “not capable of discharging the duties of office,” as stated by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
“Democrats are just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic,” he writes on X.
