This weekend, eat way too much cheese and then go judge the Olympians
BY: Kartya Vucetic
Credit should always be given where it’s deserved, and I’m not even going to lie when I say that Sydney is slinging some goods this weekend. Not only are we coming off the bat of International Tequila Day, but the Olympics officially kick off this Saturday AEST. In other words, no matter your prerogative, there’s something to celebrate.
Manuka Honey and Confidence Man are both standout live music acts that you can still book tickets for this weekend, and they’re worth checking out. Alternatively, head over to Carriageworks and gorge yourself on some rotten blue cheese to kick off the weekend.
It doesn’t matter what you do, just do something. Yes, it’s cold, but I know you can do it sweetheart. Check below for the best things to do this weekend.
Chuleo Club x Manuka Honey
Resident Advisor’s top music pick for this weekend might just be ours too. Chuleo Club has officially travelled all the way up from Melbourne to give us a night of killer Latin club and reggaeton music. It might not be your typical ABBA hits kind of night out, but consider it time to opt for something a little different and definitely more refreshing. Manuka Honey will also be headlining the night in celebration of her first ever show in Sydney.
- When: Friday 26 July, from 9pm
- Where: Civic Underground
- How much: From $30
- Check it out here.
International Tequila Day Party @ Gitano
Missed out on celebrating International Tequila Day on Wednesday? Fret not petal, for Gitano is keeping the spirits (quite literally) flowing with their Saturday night International Tequila Day Party. Kicking off at 10pm, the restaurant-cum-nightclub will be slinging Patron cocktails and hosting a DJ lineup that includes Lexx London and Ashlea Milinkovic. Personal advice is to get in on the early side, it’s bound to be a big party.
- When: Saturday 27 July, from 10pm
- Where: Gitano, Double Bay
- How much: Free entry
- Check it out here.
Olympics and Paralympics Live Site
Whether you’re a sports enthusiast or not, there’s no denying that the Olympics and Paralympics carry an energy that’s on a whole new playing field. This Saturday (AEST) marks the official start of the competition, and we’re absolutely heaving for it. If you’re anywhere around the area and keen to be part of the vibe, head over to Tumbalong Park in Darling Harbour to watch live games on the big screen.
- When: From Saturday 27 July
- Where: Tumbalong Park, Darling Harbour
- How much: Free entry
- Check it out here.
Lost Sundays x Confidence Man
For the kids who don’t have something called a job to attend Monday morning, might I suggest Lost Sundays this week? The regular Ivy special is known to be regularly solid, but this week’s lineup will almost certainly go off. They’re bringing on Confidence Man to DJ the headline set, alongside supporting acts Troy Beman and Gabriella Spritz. Right now early tickets are also only $10 and score you a free vodka Red Bull. Consider this your sign to assemble the squadron.
- When: Sunday 28 July, from 6pm
- Where: Ivy
- How much: From $10
- Check it out here.
Mould: A Cheese Festival
It’s smelly, it’s mouldy, and it’s outright fucking feral (which is why we love it). That’s right, I’m talking about cheese. For all those lactose tolerating lads and lasses who stand beside me, make your way down to Carriageworks this weekend for the ultimate fromage fest. Mould: A Cheese Festival is returning to Sydney to showcase over 100 varieties of local and artisanal cheeses. Tickets to the market will run you $49, but come hungry and make your money back with the samples.
- When: Friday 26 to Sunday 28 July
- Where: Carriageworks
- How much: From $49
- Check it out here.
LAST CHANCE FOR: Bernie Dieter’s Club Kabarett
It’s official, Bernie Dieter is back to hosting her opulent eastern Berlin kabarett at the Sydney Spiegeltent. Think debauchery, theatrics, and circus acts all in one show. It feels as if cabaret has suddenly become trendy again this year, and we’ll be the first to admit that we’re here for it. Besides, I’ve personally always wanted to see a hair-hanger. This one’s not for your weak-stomached mates.
- When: Until Sunday 28 July
- Where: The Entertainment Quarter
- How much: From $50
- Check it out here.
Dracula at the Sydney Theatre Company
Go on, have your goth moment. If you feel like treating yourself to some culture this month, book a ticket to Kip Williams’ theatrical adaptation of Dracula. The director’s latest iteration of the hybrid genre ‘cine-theatre’ should be interesting at the very least. Besides, if you’re going to go into full angsty mode you might as well do it under the guise of dinner and a show.
- When: Until Sunday 4 August
- Where: Roslyn Packer Theatre
- How much: From $70
- Check it out here.
