REVIEW We finally got around to checking out Merivale’s Good Luck Restaurant Lounge

, |

Are we late to the game? Probably. But with Good Luck Restaurant Lounge, it’s definitely one of those better-late-than-never situations. We finally snagged a reso a few weeks ago, and as much as we hate to admit it, we’re calling it official.

It’s worth the hype.

After being greeted by the ever-so-cheeky, “Feeling lucky?” neon sign, step downstairs into the underground abyss and prepare to be transported. The Merivale design team worked alongside Akin Atelier to deliver yet another Asian restaurant offering in the Ivy precinct, but one entirely different to its sisters, Mr Wong’s and MuMu. This time, you’ll be double checking the date on your phone just to make sure you haven’t teleported to a country-town Chinese restaurant straight from the ’70s.

Granny couches, mosaic tiles and retro dining chairs are only the beginning when it comes to delivering an authentic yet playful atmosphere. The immense thought, care-factor and attention to detail that’s gone into its creation truly is a marvel. We’re a little sceptical about Merivale restaurants nowadays, as they do have the tendency to give off the same vibe. In this case, Good Luck is the exception.

As far as the food goes, it’s solid to say the least. Naturally, the menu does begin to blur into the offerings that you’ll find at Mr Wong’s and MuMu’s. After all, there are only so many ways you can serve up mud crab. That being said, our favourite dish would have to be the fried eggs and whipped tofu. An unexpected combination that might send some reeling, but for whatever reason, rest assured that it works.

If we were to summarise Good Luck Restaurant Lounge, it’s special without being snooty. There’s a sense of charm and nostalgia to the restaurant that makes it difficult to frown upon, and it’s a perfect option for those wanting a premium menu, all fun and no fuss.

It’s also a great place to start a Saturday night. Looking to make plans afterwards? Walk over to Calypso at The Bristol in Barangaroo for a guaranteed good time.
