OPINION PIECE
After Paul Antoine’s antics, MAFS now has a chance to take a stand. Jury’s out as to whether they’ll actually do that though…

MAFS' Paul and Carina

If you were left shocked by last night’s dinner party episode of MAFS and Paul Antoine’s startling confession, you’re not alone.

In case you missed it, Paul lost his temper and punched a wall in his apartment, after his wife Carina Mirabile confessed she once had a fling with a rapper. He tearfully apologised to Carina the next day, but his apology wasn’t without a healthy dose of excuse-ry. He tried to rationalise that he lost his temper after Carina wouldn’t leave him alone while trying to calm him down in the moment. Apparently, Carina not giving him space was quite ‘disrespectful’, actually. So that justifies punching a wall!

Paul then took to the dinner party to confess his disgusting behaviour to the whole group, and was obviously met with a lot of shock.

While the experts sat back and watched it unfold, they all agreed the behaviour was unacceptable, and that Paul would need to be addressed at the next commitment ceremony – obviously.

But it does raise one important question: should Paul even be allowed to stay in the experiment?

MAFS has the chance to actually take a stand

It’s not news by now that MAFS has had its fair share of controversial characters and questionable men over the years, but Paul’s reaction puts an even darker twist on these behaviours on TV.

What Paul did isn’t a “relationship challenge” or hurdle he and Carina have to overcome. It’s a dangerous overreaction that should get him kicked off the show, rather than the likely outcome, which will be affording him with some sort of character redemption arc.

Regardless of how bad he feels about his violent outburst (which, he absolutely should), and regardless of the fact he insists it’s the first time he’s ever done something like that, Paul does not deserve to continue be beamed out onto our TV screens.

He should be cut from the show, out of the limelight, and probably in some serious therapy, first time punching a wall or not. Because what happens next time if it’s not a wall? What happens if someone accidentally ‘gets in the way’?

While it’s bad enough that we suffer through other men like Adrian emotionally gaslighting their wives every week, the first sign of any physical violence should be the first and only sign to kick someone off the show.

To MAFS and the experts, you know what to do: this is an actual chance to take a stand, and not disrespect the women in the experiment, nay all of Australia, as the country goes through a domestic violence epidemic.

Do the right thing and take Paul off-air.
